Madonna: The Virtual History Tour

Thanks to a friend’s late night invite, yesterday I went to see “Madonna: The Virtual History Tour” which took place in Provincetown, SL.

When I arrived, already half-way into the concert, the large hall was packed full, with a lot of loud gestures and one avatar sitting close to me emitting ghastly screams, followed by swearing and cursing from others.

Things calmed down after the break. Once the new set was ready on the stage, the curtain went up revealing a nicely designed scene for the song “Frozen.”

Animations and set design were excellent throughout, quite unlike anything I’ve seen in SL music events, with a different scene for each song. Preparation for this must have taken a lot of time and effort.

The concert ended with “Material Girl” and Madonna throwing the dollar bills around…

I was sorry to have missed greater part of the concert. However, the next one will be some time in June, and I’ll make sure to be there.

Zoree’s fado music show

In my part of the (real) world, traditional Portuguese music – fado – became popular relatively recently, with the international success of the celebrated Portuguese ensemble Madredeus. When a friend invited me to attend an inworld fado show, I knew I’d had to be there.

And so last night we had the privilege of listening to the beautiful voice of Treza Bettencourt (Zoree in SL). If you have any interest in high-quality music performances in SL, this is a name you have to make a note of.

She was singing for over an hour, filling the space of an old theatre with charm and genuine kindness. I’m not an expert at fado, but it sounds like the sort of music that simply has to be sung in a heartfelt way. It cannot be faked.

The atmosphere was warm and intimate, just like her voice and the words of the songs she sang. Lyrics were about love and romance, broken hearts and unfulfilled dreams. I had to chuckle when she said something like, “We Portuguese like to suffer,” as that sounds a lot like the folk music that I’m familiar with. I guess like love, love pains too are universal.

It was a beautiful night, and I give thanks to JoaoPedro Oh, known inworld simply as Joa, for organizing the event.

P.S. More snapshots are available on Abinoam’s Tumblr.

Luvofmusic at Forever Yours Jazz Club

One thing that is often overlooked in critical reviews of Second Life in the mainstream media is SL’s thriving art scene. Apart from visual artists, doing amazing things in SL’s 3D virtual environment, there are also exceptional musical talents, singers who provide us quality live entertainment, regardless of where in the RL world we might find ourselves. And, of course, the venue owners who make it all possible.

Last night, Duncan and I paid a visit to Forever Yours Jazz Club, a cozy venue found at this location. It was a début performance there of an artist we’ve never had a chance to listen to before, Luvofmusic.

Her voice sounded very professional; selection of songs – mostly jazz standards – was just perfect and the general atmosphere in the club was very pleasant and relaxing.

It was lovely listening to Luvofmusic singing, while the snow was falling outside. If you enjoy jazz music and quality live inworld performances, you will want to save this club’s LM.

A visit to Music Island: Vaughan Williams and Soundsmith Kamachi

It’s been a while since I last visited the Music Island at Virtlantis. As they say, it never rains but it pours. Last night Duncan and I went to check out one of Aelthing Aeon’s “Let’s talk classical music” events there, which take place every 3rd Saturday. Aelthing is a guest lecturer with the National Federation of Recorded Music Societies (UK) and he brings a lot of background to the featured pieces. This time we had a guided listening of Vaughan Williams’ piece Hodie dating from the early 1950s.

I must admit I’m not exactly a fan of Williams, but that’s why I wanted to attend this event. Where and when else was I going to listen to Hodie? In all honesty, somewhere towards the middle I found myself on Marketplace shopping for a Hummer, with Williams’ music in the background. But it was nice to be there and exchange comments with Duncan, while sipping tea in RL.

Not having much to do, we decided to stay for the second event as well,  Soundsmith Kamachi’s concert. Seeing him for the first time, as he went up on the stage, I was wondering – now what kind of music is he going to play?

But actually, I found his works very interesting. Again, not the kind of music I would normally listen to, but it was good to be exposed to it. Soundsmith played his own electronica pieces, some of which were quite meditative and relaxing, inspired by Buddhist chants and with names such as “Faith”, while others were more energetic and flamboyant.

You can hear some of his works here.

As the winter break is approaching, I’m hoping to be able to attend more of such inworld events.

P.S. The Hummer turned out to be a good purchase, too.

Frothy Music

Following an announcement on Ello, earlier today I went to check out Zak Claxton’s live music performance at Frothy Music. Not being familiar with either Frothy Music or Zak’s work, what initially caught my attention was his description of the music he would be performing: “pensive, melancholy, and wistful sounds of the season.” It sounded just like something I might enjoy. And enjoy I did.

As I first TPed in, the venue looked somewhat familiar. Soon I realized it’s located on Heterocera – not so close to my home, but in close proximity to both the SLRR railway tracks and one of the Linden roads. I must have seen it before, during some of my journeys. Before the performance even started, I was glad to see a place like that on the mainland. Next time I’ll drive there, instead of TPing!

The crowd was small but very friendly. Again, considering how crazy SL events can look like, this one was surprisingly normal – in a good way, too. Relaxing atmosphere, pleasant people, no annoying gestures… Just what I needed on a Sunday evening, it was really lovely. And Zak’s performance was just as he advertised it. It was great to hear the songs of renowned singer-songwriters such as Neil Young or Beck, but also his own music. Needless to say, it’s a place I’m very much looking forward to visiting again.
